Adapting to Change: Devotional Thoughts from a Staunch Stick-in-the-Mud

Everything changes. And I hate that.

It makes it so difficult to plan one’s life, doesn’t it? Hopes, dreams, schemes…might work for the present, but then an unexpected diagnosis or earth-shattering personal discovery throws it all away.

And we change.

And that’s really hard for this ‘all or nothing’ person to wrap her head around. If I commit to something, I want to follow it through… forever. I’m constantly trying to adopt the best schedules or make plans that will last for years to improve efficiency.

But then change hits. And I’m tired of hating that.

I’m tired of resisting change like I can stop it–like I can outsmart life if I just think and work hard enough. I’ve tried. And I’m tired.

So what if I embraced it?

What if I could pivot willingly, embracing the present for what it is and letting go of what no longer serves this reality?

What if I could look forward with optimism, seeing change as opportunity rather than opposition?

Adapting to change as if it were a ‘set-up’ not a ‘set-backs,’ and remember that, if everything changes, then even the hard seasons will eventually give way to happier ones.

I could still grieve the plan, but I’d no longer be chained to it.

And I think that’s what it boils down to: freedom. I want to be unhindered by circumstances outside my control, so I work to cocoon myself away from the unpredictable, then blame myself when my insulation wasn’t good enough.

It’ll never be good enough.

So I’m breaking free. I’m stretching my wings. I’m testing a faith in God who doesn’t change and who has never needed my perfect performance to achieve His plans. Maybe I can ride on the winds of His love and grace, finally grasping what it means to be “free indeed” (John 8:36)

Because everything but Him changes. Maybe that’s the blessing.
